A person’s back molars are important for properly chewing food. But these teeth are also the most prone to cavities and decay. Fortunately, with dental sealants and good oral hygiene, we can help avoid this serious issue.
The molars and premolars are more susceptible to decay because of their anatomical structure. The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have narrow grooves, or fissures, that trap bacteria and plaque more easily. These fissures are also harder to clean because of their narrow and hard to reach spots. Dental sealants are the perfect solution for children or adults who may be suffering from decay in the back teeth.
Before a dental sealant can be applied, our dentists will make sure that all decay is removed from the fissures first, so that no bacteria gets trapped underneath the sealants. After the tooth is cleaned and dried, an etching gel is used to roughen the surfaces of the tooth. This helps in the bonding process. The sealant will then be coated onto the tooth and dried with a special light.
